About Albert Marquès:
Albert Marquès is a pianist, composer, and political activist from a working-class town near Barcelona. Influenced by punk and jazz legends like Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock, he was initially self-taught before attending Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu. Key trips to Palestine and Cuba shaped his perspective. In Barcelona, he played with top musicians before moving to Paris, where he joined African American drummer Leon Parker’s quartet.
At 25, Marquès moved to New York City to pursue jazz, where he met mentor Arturo O’Farrill, who inspired and hired him to teach with the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance. Marquès combines contemporary jazz, flamenco, Afro Cuban music, and social justice in his project Freedom First. He has recorded four albums and collaborates with prominent musicians. He is the Music Director at the Institute for Collaborative Education in NYC.
