Los Gaiteros De San Jacinto, a seminal ensemble founded in the mid-1950s, emerged as a beacon of Colombian musical tradition under the visionary guidance of folklorists Manuel and Delia Zapata Olivella. Embarking on their inaugural tour throughout Colombia, they soon extended their reach to the global stage, performing in countries like China, Japan, Russia, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and across Europe, beginning in 1958.
Their participation in the 1968 Olympic Cultural Games in Mexico marked a significant milestone in their career, underscoring their commitment to both artistic excellence and cultural diplomacy. With an unwavering dedication to preserving and advancing the tradition of gaita music, their contributions to Cumbia have earned them recognition as one of the most vital and distinguished gaita ensembles in the world.
The legacy of Los Gaiteros De San Jacinto is not only reflected in their dynamic touring history but also in their ability to transcend generations with their exceptional musicianship. As one of the few gaita groups whose music has been commercially produced, they stand as the foremost representative of gaitas and Cumbia, both in Colombia and on the international stage.
Their critically acclaimed album, "Un Fuego de Sangre Pura" (Fire in the Blood), part of the Smithsonian Folkways Series Recordings from the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C., secured them the Latin Grammy Award in 2007 for Best Traditional Album. Competing against renowned artists like Muñequitos de Matanzas from Cuba, this accolade further solidified their position in the annals of Latin American music. Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto, encapsulating a century of tradition, remains driven by a passion that has endured a lifetime. Their story is not merely a chronicle of musical achievements but a living testament to the resilience, innovation, and soul of Colombian culture.
