Peruvian Night by FESTEJATION & Alvaro Isla

In the intersection of sunlit dunes and the Pacific's surf, the Afro-Peruvian musical tradition emerged. "Festejation" sees NY artists from across the Americas honor this style. Led by Edward Pérez, they blend high art with a laid-back dance vibe, perfect with a pisco sour

About FESTEJATION:

Peruvian Sounds of New York, returns to the hanging stage at Terraza! The group presents a repertoire ranging from invigorating festejos to sultry landos, freely combining traditional Afro-Peruvian elements with jazz, funk, and other Latin styles, creating a vision of coastal Peruvian music that could only come from New York.

Edward Pérez has performed with many of the greats in the Afro-Peruvian genre (Eva Ayllón, Chocolate Algendones, Juan Medrano Cotito, Sergio Valdeos, Chevo Ballumbrosio, Gigio Parodi, etc). Also known for his work as a jazz bassist, he has toured throughout the world, performing in many of the world’s foremost venues and recorded on a CD nominated for Grammy in the category of a best Latin jazz album.

About Alvaro Isla: A multifaceted talent in the world of music and culture, Alvaro Isla is a singer, instrumentalist, music coach, symphony-choral director, actor, and cultural manager. Currently immersed in the study of Choral Direction at the National Conservatory of Music, his academic pursuits only scratch the surface of his diverse contributions to the arts.

With a voice that resonates across genres, Alvaro serves as the lead vocalist for the Ska group Sin Comillas, a position that led him to victory at the San Miguel Pop Music competition. His musical explorations also include performing with Mamauca, a group dedicated to Creole and Afro-Peruvian music, and Barrio Bomba, a Salsa ensemble. Moreover, he's the innovative director of Que Tal Afro, a platform showcasing Afro-inspired music.

As a co-leader, Alvaro's influence has been felt in various choral groups. With Los Cantores de San Juan Macías, he represented Peru at the international Cantapueblo Children Festival in Mendoza, Argentina. Additionally, he's been an integral part of La Coral de Schola Cantorum de Lima and the Chamber Choir of Lima Triunfante.

Alvaro's musical prowess is the result of rigorous training under the guidance of esteemed teachers such as Marco Iriarte, Ronald Ramírez, Jose Quezada Macchiavello, Lola Márquez, and others. This education has laid the foundation for his work as a professor, imparting musical language, vocal technique, and singing skills across various Lima-based institutions, including the Institute of the Chamber of Commerce and the Spanish Center of Peru.

Beyond his musical endeavors, Alvaro's role as a cultural manager reflects his commitment to community enrichment. He organizes free, non-profit art festivals aimed at discovering new talent, fostering collaboration, and providing access to culture without barriers. The “Festival of Art Uniting Cultures” stands as one of his most impactful initiatives, embodying Alvaro's vision of music and art as unifying forces.
