About “Puyaloahí”:

“Puyaloahí” is a dedicated musical collective immersed in the vibrant sounds and rhythms intrinsic to Colombia's traditional Afro-Indigenous gaita music from the Caribbean coast. The ensemble intricately weaves various forms such as cumbia, porro, merengue, and puya, among others, creating a tapestry of sound that celebrates the rich musical heritage of the region. Established in 2022 by members of the Colombian diaspora, Puyaloahí was conceived as both a tribute and celebration of the enduring legacy of pioneering individuals who mastered the Indigenous Chuana flute and African drums.

Formed far from their ancestral lands, Puyaloahí took shape on the territory originally inhabited by the Lenape-Canarsie people, land involuntarily relinquished. The collective represents a decolonial musical endeavor, passionately committed to fostering community bonds through the universal language of music. Crafted by the people and for the people, Puyaloahí serves as a beacon of cultural celebration and connectivity amidst displacement.
