About Tambacum:
Founded in 2020 on Colombia’s Afro-Pacific coast in the culturally rich town of Nuquí, Tambacum is a traditional and folkloric music group that embodies the vibrant spirit of the region. Nestled where the rainforest meets the Pacific Ocean, Nuquí is steeped in history, music, and ancestry, and Tambacum channels this heritage into their performances. Under the leadership of Jhon Esteban Lasso Mena, a talented singer, composer, and dancer, the group is dedicated to preserving and promoting the Afro-Colombian rhythms of Tamborito and Cumbancha.
Tambacum quickly rose to national prominence, winning first place at the 2021 Traditional and Campesino Music Festival, solidifying their status as cultural ambassadors of Nuquí. The group has performed at key festivals such as the Flecho Festival and the Cumbancha Festival, and has played an active role in organizing the Tamborito Festival. Their influence extends beyond Nuquí, with tours in major Colombian cities like Medellín, Bogotá, and Quibdó, and international performances, including their representation of Nuquí at Documenta 15 in Kassel, Germany.
As LiberArte’s Artist in Residence for 2023-2024, Tambacum continues to evolve, bringing the cultural legacy of Nuquí to a global audience. Their music is a celebration of community, resilience, and the enduring power of tradition, ensuring that the heartbeat of Nuquí resonates worldwide. Through passionate performances, Tambacum not only preserves but also revitalizes the cultural heritage of their homeland, leaving a lasting impact on the world music scene.
