About Tapacamino Colectivo Musiquero:
It is an acclaimed musical group from Oaxaca, Mexico, established in 2005. Focused on traditional music, specifically Son Jarocho and the fandango de tarima from the Papaloapan Basin, the collective is dedicated to the revival and dissemination of these cultural expressions. Led by Fernando Guadarrama Olivera, a renowned versifier, decimist, and lyricist, Tapacamino has achieved significant recognition, including an award from the National Institute of Fine Arts for their project "La Coronela" and winning the state "Canción del Agua" contest in 2006. The collective blends traditions from various regions, encompassing sones, songs, and rhythms ranging from Son Jarocho to Argentine milongas. They have collaborated with international musicians and continue to showcase their art in various forums, promoting cultural encounters and experimentation. With a 15-year journey up to 2020, Tapacamino has emerged as a significant figure in Oaxaca's music scene and as a promoter of workshops and cultural events, attracting a wide array of musicians and son enthusiasts.
About Baba Musa:
The lead singer of Baba Musa & Nature’s Drummers, is a prominent figure in promoting West African culture through performance. With a career spanning over 30 years, his group focuses on educating and inspiring others, particularly young students. They recently visited Bowling Green Junior High School, sharing stories of historical figures like Mansa Musa, demonstrating cultural instruments, and emphasizing the significance of black history. Musa, known for his engaging approach that combines history, humor, and music, encourages students to strive for excellence, believing they have the potential to be world changers.
About Fernando Guadarrama Olivera:
A versatile musician, poet, and lyricist, is renowned for his expertise in Son Jarocho and fandango. Originating from Córdoba, Veracruz, he has been a resident of Oaxaca City for over 26 years. As a member of the Grammy-winning Conga Patria Son Jarocho Collective, he collaborated with Arturo O'Farrill and the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra on the acclaimed album “Fandango at the Wall in New York.” His poetry has been featured in national media in Mexico and he has participated in international spoken word events across Cuba, San Francisco, Puerto Rico, and New York. Since 2005, Guadarrama has led the Taller de sones y verseda Tapacamino, now known as Tapacamino Colectivo Musiquero. Under his direction, the collective produced the album "La Coronela" in 2013 with support from the National Institute of Fine Arts. His 2017-2018 album "Chichicastenango" was a self-published work produced in Oaxaca and Buenos Aires, featuring Argentine percussionist Gregorio Quiros. In 2020, Guadarrama won the "Strengthening of Traditional Music" contest by the Secretariat of Arts and Cultures of Oaxaca, Mexico.
About Gregorio Quiros:
Gregorio is an accomplished marimba player, singer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist, deeply versed in traditional Latin American music. Educated in Argentine folk percussion at Buenos Aires' Higher Institute of Music, he embarked on extensive travels across Latin America, from Argentina to Mexico, immersing himself in regional musical traditions. Between 2015 and 2019, he taught Ethnomusicology at Buenos Aires' Manuel de Falla Conservatory. His notable works include the album “Currulao Al Sur,” a result of his scholarship-supported training in Colombia, and “Forza da Paz” from his residency in Brazil under the Ibermúsicas program. Quiros' diverse collaborations span several countries, culminating in his 2018 production “Placa Placa Coatepec.” Settling in Mexico in 2019, he has performed widely across the country and recently toured the US, engaging in educational workshops. His project benefits from support by various cultural organizations, including the New York State Council on the Arts and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.

His deep-rooted passion for Mexican culture and Nahuatl cosmogony is reflected in his work, which spans across various high-profile projects. As the founder and director of Jarana Beat, a 10-piece ensemble, he has masterfully blended Mexican folk with Afro-Amerindian traditions, leading the band to notable accolades including a nomination at the 2020 Independent Music Awards and winning the 2015 Mexican Music Award for Best Contemporary Folk Band. Padilla-Isunza's talents extend beyond performance; he has shared the stage and toured with Grammy Award-winning and nominated artists such as Lila Downs and Residente. As the founder of JARANA RECORDS in New York City, he has produced a myriad of albums and singles for diverse artists, showcasing his versatility and commitment to fostering emerging talents. His contributions to musical theatre include writing original music for shows like "Fandango for Mariposas" and "Coyotes." Beyond his musical pursuits, Padilla-Isunza is dedicated to the diffusion and education of traditional Mexican music and culture in New York. He founded the “Encuentro de Jaraneros de Nueva York,” a significant event that celebrates the art of Son Jarocho, bridging traditional Mexican artists with new communities in the city. His work has earned him recognition as a key reference in Son Jarocho culture and other Mexican traditions, not only in New York but also in other parts of the United States, Canada, Spain, and Central and South America. Throughout his career, Padilla-Isunza has remained a vital force in championing and strengthening the Mexican music scene, directing projects like México Beyond Mariachi and the Calpulli Mexican Dance Company. His influence and expertise have led him to roles as a music writer and producer for prominent platforms such as National Geographic and Netflix, and as a lecturer at esteemed institutions like The New School University and Berklee College of Music. Sinuhé Padilla-Isunza's enduring commitment to his craft and culture positions him as a significant figure in the world of music and cultural preservation.
